Sicko !

Wow, brilliant film this...

If you’ve not watched this movie, you must. Michael Moore is a brilliant cinematographer and he certainly didn’t let up in this ironic angle on the American health care system, with comparisons with erstwhile looked down upon states like Cuba. It’s remarkable how big business has taken hold of such an important and basic element of American life.

In one scene in the film one woman, unconscious when she is put into an ambulance, is billed for the trip because her insurer says it was not pre-authorized. Now you wonder how could she get authorization for the ambulance ride when she was out cold on the pavement? Yeah, that bad.

Towards the film's end, he discovers that Jim Keneflick, proprietor of the web's largest anti-Moore website Moorewatch.com, is going to be forced to shut down his site after his wife becomes ill and he can't afford the $12,000 needed to pay for her care. So, keen to protect Keneflick's right to free speech, or so he says, he sends the money to him. Jim is especially grateful for the anonymous contribution. It is only revealed that it was from Michael Moore, when the film is released.

The movie as described by some movie reviewers and critics..

“acidic new documentary about healthcare”

“Michael Moore's litany of horrors about the American health care system, which is run for profit,”

“It's those personal stories, of ordinary lives destroyed one form letter at a time, that make "Sicko" so powerful.”

"It's not impossible that this bitterly funny, bitterly sad call to alms could move reform back up the political agenda. For that reason alone, you owe it to yourself to see this movie."

“It’s a really brilliant movie this, and surreal”

A must watch.

I haven't watched Sicko but it sound like a nice movie. 1st time on you blog n its very nice. Are you still an Intern at Thika? hows Dr. Muiruri n Sister Florence Kyama in amenity? let just say I visited you Gyne early this year n the nursery is so tinny...they should consider doing something about it.

Good work you are doing here, keep it up.(SIFE student?)

Thanks for the big up. Yep, i'm still an intern, for another 2 months or so.. Crazy, busy, drama this place.

Dr. Muiruri's doing good. Paediatrics was my 1st rotation, and she could get fired up whenever her "babies" were being mismanaged. Sr Kyama, i'm not sure i know her.. but we heardly do any work there. That's consultants cash, so we are kept well away.
I worked in that nursery for a whole month.. Sweltering! I didn't mind the tiny, altho' it jus' made the heat so much worse!!
There won't be any expansion at this hospital for a long while. It's a govt thing that i don't understand either.

Yep, SIFE student. I was a presenter actually. We went to Paris for the world cup and made it to the semi's! ah.. good times..

Hey..this has nothing to do with your post..! Im also from Kenya doin med in india...was wondering is there a USMLE training centre back at home in nairobi? i heard there was one long before in westlands, mpaka road. im not sure now!

Hey Abida,
thanks for visiting my blog. The centre you are talking about at Westlands Mpaka rd is still there. But it's not a training centre for UMSLE, it's an exam centre for American Standardized tests.. Which includes USMLE.
So for guyz in Kenya that want to do the USMLE's, they get their ECFMG papers together etc, pay the exam fees and then sit the exam at that centre.
They would need quite a wide variety of medical professionals to do training, am almost certain that they don't do so.
Otherwise, how's India? When are you finishing your degree?
Hola..

Hey Abbida,
first huge apology for the late, late reply.. Been a bit crzy on my end.
Good to hear you are enjoying India, and i certainly don't mind the lots of questions.
Av heard the licensing exam is a walk in the park, having worked with one or 2 people who apparently passed it! Lol..
That site is probably updated once every 3 or 4 years, and you might not even find the kind of information that you might consider important as doctor that hopes to come to Kenya to work one day!
the email's jpmonda(at)gmail(dot)com..
Hola.
